From Krista Melani

Could you please let my students know that all the required readings for ComD 6850 are now available on course reserve. The password to access them is "mel6850" I know I will not see them until Monday, June 26 but I wanted them to know their materials are ready now. I will also leave a blue binder, containing a hard copy of the required readings for this course (with you?) so that any student can BORROW it, make copies for themselves, and return it just incase they have difficulties printing the materials on course reserve. Thanks! Krista

25 Hours of Observation

When you come to the orientation meeting please bring written and signed written verification that you have completed your 25 hours of observation (for ASHA). I may have told you this before but I'll repeat it just in case.

The 25 observation hours need to be documented with a written summary or log of the hours you earned and just a few words about what you observed in each observation. Then, the form needs to have the signature(s) of the person/people you observed or who supevised your observations . THE PEOPLE WHO YOU OBSERVED OR WHO SUPERVISED YOUR OBSERVATIONS MUST HAVE THEIR ASHA-CCC IN ORDER FOR THE HOURS TO BE COUNTED.

For the students who graduated from USU's program, we already have the summary cards on file for you so you'll be able to get them when you get here. That's all you will need.

Example:

Date: Observation: # hrs.
1/1/06 artic rx, lang eval 2.0
1/5/06 fluency rx - preschool 1.5
2/4/06 lang rx (small group) 1.5
etc. etc. etc.
I verify that the person listed above completed the 25 hours of observation as listed. Signature: ______________________ ASHA #: ________________________

Current Transcript

When you come to the orientation meeting please be sure to bring updated, current transcripts that include ALL of your undergraduate coursework and show your degree(s) and the date(s) the degree(s) was/were earned. This is very important. Although we have transcripts for all of you in your graduate school applications, we need CURRENT ones so the ones we have won't work. The transcripts do not have to be official ones sent from the universities. You can just print unofficial ones as long as they are accurate and current. Thanks.

Summer Semester Reminder

The program will begin Friday, June 9 with an orientation meeting that will begin at 2:30 and go to about 4:00 or 4:30. This is a very important meeting and you all must be in attendance. No exceptions! I personally don't like to be the tough guy and make such mandates but in this program I must do so. I know you all have "lives" and we'll try to respect that, but our job is to provide you with an excellent graduate education and so we will demand your full participation and enthusiasm. If that won't be possible we ask you to make that decision right now and decline the acceptance that was offered to you. We have a few potential students that make that choice each year and we will certainly understand if you choose to do so. This is a demanding program (as is any top quality graduate school program) and we expect all students to be up and running full speed and not dragging or complaining or doing the least they can to get by. Take your undergraduate program and multiply it by three or four and that will likely give you an idea of what to expect in graduate school. We require your full dedication and effort and you will be weary but well-prepared when you finish this program. If that won't be possible, please don't even start.

Following the orientation meeting, classes will then be held during the weeks of June 12, June 26, July 10, July 17, July 31. Classes will begin at about 8:00 a.m. and end at about 5:00 or perhaps a little later. During the week of June 12 you will actually be attending parts of our Summer Seminars (workshops for practicing SLPs) where you'll see and hear some of the TOP professionals in our field from around the country. I'll have a specific schedule for you soon. I STRONGLY recommend that you don't try to commute back and forth each day. I'll give you some information about apartments soon as well. The "off" weeks between the "on" weeks will be pretty busy as well so you will need to dedicate a significant amount of time during those "off" weeks to your education.

Reminders: Bring Following Items to Orientation Meeting

  • Proof of Personal Liability Insurance
USU provides students registered in clinic practicum with some liability coverage at no charge. It is the opinion of the department that additional liability coverage is necessary for students enrolled in clinical practicum. The Department of Communicative Disorders and Deaf Education therefore requires that students have proof of some type of additional malpractice liability insurance while enrolled in clinical practicum. One source for inexpensive student liability insurance (about $20 per year) is HPSO. The website for HPSO is: http://www.hpso.com/students/studentindex.php3 Proof of personal liability insurance must be submitted on the first day of classes in Summer 06.
  • Proof of Personal Health Insurance
The various clinical settings you will be in as you acquire clinical clock hours have different inherent risks. Most of the settings have no documented policies regarding coverage of students in the case of an accident. For that reason, if you are not covered by your school district's health insurance program, you are required to carry your own health insurance during all semesters you are participating in any type of clinical experience. Proof of personal health insurance must be submitted on the first day of classes in Summer 06. If you have health insurance through your school district MAKE SURE it will cover you in other clinic settings where you will be gaining some of your other clinical experiences (hospitals, nursing homes, etc.)
  • Proof of Immunizations
To protect the health of clients/patients, students, faculty, and staff in all clinical assignments and internship experiences, you will be required to provide the following documentation when you arrive at the beginning of Summer 06 Semester:
    1. Proof of two MMR (measles/mumps/rubella) vaccinations (personal or school records) OR blood test results of immunity to rubella and rubeola.
    2. Proof of an annual TB (tuberculosis) skin test placed and read within the current calendar year. IF A SKIN TEST IS POSITIVE, a copy of a chest x-ray report done within the past two years must be provided. TB testing must be completed annually while a student is involved in the provision of clinical services.
    3. If you have not had or are unsure if you have had chicken pox, blood test results of immunity or proof of immunization to chicken pox must be provided.
    4. Tetanus immunization within the past 10 years.
    5. Hepatitis B series (three shots over a six-month period) is not required but is STRONGLY recommended, particularly if you intend to work in preschool or health care facilities.
If you are pregnant or think you may become pregnant soon please check with your physician before getting any of these immunizations!
  • Background Check
When you begin graduate school this summer you will apply and become accepted into the College of Education's Teacher Education Program. This really just requires filling out a form in the orientation meeting and getting a background check through the Utah State Office of Education (USOE). Even though some of you may have already completed a background check for your school district you will have to complete another one through the USOE. The reason, although I do not agree, is that the USOE does a more thorough check nationwide, whereas the school districts evidently only search in Utah. I have appealed this requirement because it makes no sense to me, but, I have not been successful. The cost will be $69.00. Plan to bring that amount with you for this purpose to the orientation meeting.

Using the USU Library System From Home

You will most certainly need to access articles and do research through the library system as you go through graduate school. I would like you to complete a training experience so you'll know how to do so. Go through the Library Research training module on the homepage and then complete the two library assignments posted in the Assignments. Each is worth 50 points.

WebCT Email

We'll now make the big but simple switch to using WebCT email.

  • From the homepage click on "Email" and select who you want to receive your email by clicking on the "Browse" button and clicking on the name of the person to receive your email.
  • To send to the whole group click "Browse", hold down your Ctrl or Shift or maybe Alt key and hold your left mouse button down as you drag down through all the names. All the names should be highlighted.
  • To select only certain names to receive your email you hold down your Ctrl or Shift or maybe Alt key and click on the specific names of those to receive your email.

Each computer may require different keys (Alt or Ctrl or Shift) to accomlish these tasks so just experiment a bit. Please send me an email (through WebCT) so I know you're a pro. Thanks.

Back Again

I know that several of you have been involved in graduation during the last couple of weeks. Congratulations to you. As we get closer to the start of our outreach program I want to make sure we're all communicating effectively via internet. During the past few weeks there have been some problems getting the updated "refreshed" version of these daily announcements. For that reason, I'm going to make a switch, possibly temporary depending on how successful it is, from this Daily Announcements page to the "Announcements and Discussions" link on the WebCT homepage. So, please check that link DAILY. I'll leave these Daily Announcements here so you can refer to the information I've already posted, but future announcements will be posted on the "Announcements and Discussions" link. Thanks.

Message from Registration

Dear COMD Students,

This email is to let you all know that I have not been ignoring your phone calls and messages. There has been a medical issue that has come up and I have not been in the office for the past couple of days. I will also be out for the rest of the week and hopefully returning next Monday the 8th.

We are running a little behind with getting this program ready for summer semester. We do not have numbers assigned to the classes yet that is why you are not registered. I cannot put your tuition out on Access until you are registered for your classes. You probably will not be registered for your classes until the end of next week at the earliest.

You WILL NOT lose your classes or your place in this program. The delay is something on our end not yours. Please if you have questions email me. I will be checking my email from home while I am out. I am able to respond to email much faster than phone messages.

It would be much easier for me if you are planning on paying online with an e-check to just mail me (address below) your tuition payment. If you are planning on paying with a credit card please let me know and I will get your tuition put on the system after you are registered. Remember USU only takes MasterCard and Discover and will charge you an additional 2% fee. (Which with your tuition amount that will be over $50.)

Again, please email me if you have any questions or concerns.

Thanks,
Heather Swenson

Tuition Payment

Some of you are having difficulty contacting Heather to pay your tuition. I've checked with her office to see when she is available. She's working with other things and will get to our tuition as soon as possible. Please continue to try to contact her. You won't be penalized if your tuition is late because of Continuing Education's temporary delay.

Shopping

If you are still "shopping" and interviewing for the perfect school district, you may want to visit with some of the current outreach students in the districts of interest to you to get their input. I'll get their permission to send you their names and email addresses and then you can contact them. You should be a careful "shopper" and make a list of questions and interests of your own. You may want to email our outreach clinic coordinator, Chad Bingham (csbingham@cc.usu.edu) if you want to know what clinic-related questions to ask. You are in a position where you can be somewhat choosy so you should make a list of your wants and needs and be sure your interests will be met by the district of your choosing.
