The USU Speech-Language-Hearing Center (USUSLHC) is housed in the Department of Communicative Disorders and Deaf Education on the Utah State University campus. The Center provides high quality diagnostic and treatment services to clients of all ages from the university and surrounding communities.
The primary purpose of the USUSLHC is to train advanced students in the Department of Communicative Disorders and Deaf Education. Therefore, the number and type of clients accepted for diagnostic and treatment services is determined by the training needs of the Department’s students. Clients who receive speech, language or hearing services at the USUSLHC should understand that these services are provided by students who are at an appropriate level of training to participate in the practicum and who are directly supervised by appropriately certified faculty members.
Diagnostic Services
Diagnostic services are available to clients of all ages through weekly outpatient clinics conducted at the USUSLHC. These services are provided by advanced students who are directly supervised by appropriately certified faculty members. Most diagnostic outpatient appointments require one to three hours to complete, depending on the type and extent of the client’s disorder. The evaluations typically consist of a parent or client interview for obtaining pertinent information, a battery of diagnostic procedures, a final conference with the client or parent to discuss results and recommendations, and a written report of the findings. Specialized diagnostic equipment may be utilized to diagnose certain types of communication disorders, such as voice and resonance.
Diagnostic and treatment services are available for communication disorders in the areas of articulation, fluency, swallowing, voice and resonance, communication modalities, receptive and expressive language, cognition and social aspects of language.
Prior Medical Examination
Before treatment can be initiated with clients who have certain types of speech, language or related disorders, medical clearance must be received from the client's physician. Clients may be asked to provide pertinent medical, educational or related reports prior to beginning diagnostic or treatment services at the USUSLHC.
