Health Education Emphasis
Mission Statement and Objectives
The mission of the Master of Science program in Health Education is to prepare students to effectively educate individuals, families, and communities about health issues using an ecological approach and to learn the skills related to research. To this end students will learn how individual health choices, the environment, policy, and society impact health behavior and health status and to use this information to improve the quality of life for all people through informed decision making and voluntary behavior change. In addition, the Masters in Science degree enables students to become proficient researchers. Students must complete a thesis where they formulate a research question, collect and analyze data, and make conclusions and recommendations based on data results. Students are well prepared to enter advanced health education positions or continue their graduate education when they complete the Masters of Science program.
To accomplish this mission the following curriculum objectives will be implemented throughout the Master of Science Health Education Program:
- Candidates will acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to assess individual and community needs for health education.
- Candidates will acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to plan effective health education programs for diverse learners and in multiple.
- Candidates will acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to implement health education programs for diverse learners and in multiple settings.
- Candidates will acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to evaluate the effectiveness of health education programs.
- Candidates will acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to coordinate provision of health education services in the community.
- Candidates will acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to act as a resource person in health education.
- Candidates will acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to communicate health and health education needs, concerns, and resources.
- Candidates will learn the necessary skills to formulate research questions, collect and analyze data, and make appropraite conclusions based on data results.
