Corporate Wellness Emphasis
Mission Statement and Objectives
The mission of the graduate program in Health, Physical Education, and Recreation is preparing qualified professionalsin our academic discipline. Our broad mission includes teaching by providing the highest quality graduate professional preparation program, while extending into the community when appropriate, and to provide the hightest quality instruction, advisement, and faculty-student interaction. Research is also an important component of our mission. We intend to incorporate research, scholarly, and creative activity into the HPER student's total learning experience. We also encourage and provide an enhancing environment for participation in research, scholarly activity, and creative endeavors. We maintain local, regional, and national visibility in research activities. Our service mission entails providing quality outreach in the State of Utah and providing consultation to our extended region.
To accomplish this mission, the graduate students in the Corporate Wellness Program will meet the following objectives:
- To gain a basic understanding in the core classes which include: Exercise Physiology, Biomechanics, and Research Design and Statistics.
- To develop a knowledge base and be able to apply that knowledge to impact areas such as physical fitness, mental fitness, and numerous health issues.
- To be able to apply exercise prescription for both the general population and for special populations, such as: persons with diabetes, poor cholesterol profiles, heart disease, osteoporosis, and other debilitating diseases.
- To be able to adjust the workplace environment to decrease the chance of repetitive injuries, which requires a basic knowledge of occupational ergonomics.
- To gain an understanding of the concepts of marketing and operating a corporate wellness program.
- To experience a wellness program first-hand by the requirement of a 400-hour practicum in a facility that functions to promote health and wellness.
